White/Caucasian male Richard James Carns, 40, was staying at a residence on the 1900-block of Orca Street in Anchorage when, just after dawn on February 19, 2002, the quiet of the house broke. Around 6 a.m., an intruder forced entry. Carns rose to confront the stranger and, in the narrow space of that home, a brief encounter turned lethal when the intruder drew a gun and opened fire.
