On June 28, 2022, Deputy Sgt. Richard Lopez, a 51-year-old veteran of the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office (YCSO), was fatally shot while attempting to apprehend a suspect in a neighborhood near Stagecoach Trail and Red Rock in Cordes Lakes, Arizona. Sgt. Lopez, who had served with YCSO for 14 years, was responding to a call regarding a possible theft when he encountered the suspect.
