On a tragic day in March 2014, a dedicated public servant, 43-year-old Detective John Thomas Hobbs, lost his life in a violent confrontation. A 21-year veteran of the Phoenix Police Department, Detective Hobbs was part of the Fugitive Apprehension Team that was attempting to serve a felony warrant on a man wanted in connection with a murder. The suspect had recently been released from prison.
The events unfolded when the suspect fled in a vehicle, leading the detectives on a pursuit that
ended in a crash at the intersection of 43rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road. The suspect then fled on foot and opened fire on the pursuing detectives. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, Detective Hobbs and another detective were struck. Despite being mortally wounded, Detective Hobbs managed to return fire, fatally shooting the suspect.
Both injured detectives were rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital in critical condition. Tragically, Detective Hobbs succumbed to his wounds at the hospital. His colleagues remember him as a leader and a mentor to younger officers, a man who deeply loved his wife and three children. The suspect was identified as William Thornton, a man with a troubled past and a lengthy criminal record. Since the sole suspect was killed at the scene, no arrests were made in connection with Detective Hobbs's death. His ultimate sacrifice is remembered as a heroic act in the line of duty.
