In the early morning hours of a Sunday in Avondale, Arizona, a dispute between neighbors escalated into a fatal encounter. Ramon Oseguera, a 55-year-old Hispanic male, was found deceased in his garage on April 15, 2018, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The tragic events unfolded around 5 a.m. when Avondale police responded to a call of shots fired at a residence.
Upon their arrival, they discovered Oseguera's body.
Investigations revealed that Oseguera had been preparing to leave for an out-of-state funeral that morning. An argument with his neighbor, Ruben Alvarez, preceded the shooting. Oseguera's wife reported hearing a loud noise and went to the garage, where she saw her husband and Alvarez. She heard her husband say, 'I'm your friend,' before she closed the door. Shortly after, she heard several loud pops and returned to find her husband on the ground, bleeding. Witnesses saw Alvarez's truck leaving the scene.
The Avondale Police Department, with assistance from the Phoenix Police Department, located and arrested Ruben Alvarez later that day. He was taken into custody after a traffic stop. During their investigation, police found a. 40 caliber handgun, along with other firearms and ammunition, at Alvarez's home. They also discovered six. 40 caliber shell casings at the scene of the shooting. Court records indicated that Oseguera had been shot at least six times. Alvarez was subsequently booked into jail on a $500,000 bond.
