On a Sunday evening in Globe, Arizona, the lively atmosphere of Jammerz bar was shattered by an act of sudden and senseless violence that would ultimately claim the life of 22-year-old Ashley Sanchez. The young woman was enjoying a night out with friends and her cousin, Daniel Albo, on November 11, 2018, when a casual acquaintance turned a friendly game of pool into a tragic and fatal encounter.
Earlier in the evening, Ashley, Daniel, and their friends had been playing pool with a
22-year-old man named Sterling Randall Hunt. At some point, the group moved to the back patio. Hunt followed them, but he was armed with a 9mm handgun. Without warning, he opened fire, shooting Ashley, Daniel, and another friend, Charlene Peak. While on the patio, Hunt also fatally shot 44-year-old Cristi Licano. Another individual, Scott Mills, managed to escape without injury.
In the immediate aftermath, Daniel Albo and Cristi Licano were pronounced dead. Ashley Sanchez and Charlene Peak were airlifted to a hospital in Phoenix for treatment of their critical injuries. Ashley fought for her life for four days before succumbing to her injuries on November 15, 2018. The community of Globe was left reeling from the loss of three of its members in such a violent manner, with Ashley’s death marking the third fatality of the tragic shooting.
The shooter, Sterling Randall Hunt, fled the scene but was apprehended a short time later on the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation. He was subsequently charged with three counts of first-degree murder and multiple counts of attempted first-degree murder. In 2021, to avoid the death penalty, Hunt pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences in prison, ensuring he would spend the remainder of his life behind bars for the devastating and random act of violence that cut short the lives of three innocent people, including the vibrant young life of Ashley Sanchez.
