On a summer evening in Tucson, a dispute over a parking space tragically escalated, leading to the death of 28-year-old Marco Antonio Orantez Jr. on August 10, 2020. The incident unfolded in the 1600 block of West Ajo Way, where Orantez Jr. became involved in a heated argument with his neighbor.
The altercation quickly turned violent when the neighbor allegedly brandished a firearm and shot Orantez Jr.
In the chaos that ensued, the gunman also reportedly fired at two other individuals who were with Orantez Jr. at the time, though they were fortunately not hit. Responding to the scene, Tucson police officers found Orantez Jr. with gunshot wounds. He was immediately transported to a local hospital for medical attention.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Marco Antonio Orantez Jr. succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The investigation into the shooting led Tucson police to identify his neighbor, Frank P. Laney, who was 69 years old at the time, as the primary suspect. Laney was subsequently located, and following an interview with detectives, he was arrested and booked into the Pima County Jail. He faced charges of first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
