Her warm and adventurous spirit touched many, and she was known for having a heart for the downtrodden, never meeting a stranger she couldn't befriend. This loving soul's world was shattered on August 30th by an act of brutality that stemmed from within her own household.
On that fateful Sunday, Katherine was confronted by Chester Grant Pollard Espinoza, the 24-year-old grandson of her best friend, who also resided in her home on Zircon Avenue. Espinoza, who reportedly considered Katherine his 'Aunt,' held a dark and baseless belief that she was 'evil.' This delusion culminated in him shooting her in the legs and torso. Despite her life-threatening injuries, Katherine fought for survival, managing to get to her vehicle in a desperate attempt to escape the unforeseen horror that had befallen her.
Her flight for life was cut short as Espinoza followed her, firing a final, fatal shot to her head while she was in her car. In the aftermath of the horrific event, it was Espinoza's own grandmother, Katherine's best friend, who drove her to the Western Arizona Regional Medical Center. The gravity of her gunshot wounds necessitated an airlift to a hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada, but her injuries proved too severe. Later that evening, Katherine Louise Humula was pronounced deceased, leaving a void in the lives of those who cherished her.
The Bullhead City Police Department responded swiftly, arresting Chester Grant Pollard Espinoza at the residence. He was subsequently booked into the Mohave County Jail in Kingman, facing the grave charge of first-degree murder.
