In the early morning hours of a Thursday in Arivaca, Arizona, a violent encounter left two women shot. Pima County Sheriff's deputies responded to a call around 1 a.m. and discovered a grim scene. Inside a residence, 33-year-old Kaycie Mattias had been fatally wounded and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her mother, 55-year-old Monica Gilkey, was also found with gunshot wounds.
She was transported to a local hospital but ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
Witnesses at the scene informed authorities that the shooter had fled after the incident. Their accounts helped deputies identify a suspect, 36-year-old Justin Tyler Grandstaff. An alert was issued, and with the assistance of the U.S. Border Patrol, Grandstaff was apprehended at the Arivaca Checkpoint. He was subsequently taken into custody and booked into the Pima County jail.
Grandstaff faced two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of Mattias and Gilkey. At the time of his arrest, the motive for the fatal shootings was not immediately clear to investigators. The case left the small community of Arivaca in shock, as a daughter and her mother were tragically killed in a single act of violence.
