Rudolph Angel Vega Jr., a 27-year-old male, was fatally shot in a road rage incident in Tucson, Arizona, on March 4, 2021. The altercation occurred while both vehicles were traveling westbound on West Valencia Road. Vega was a passenger in one of the cars involved in the dispute. During the argument, the driver of the other vehicle, David Rivera, fired his weapon, striking Vega.
Following the shooting, the vehicle carrying Vega proceeded to a nearby hospital, but he succumbed to his
injuries and passed away the following day, March 5, 2021. Rivera, the shooter, pulled over at the scene and waited for the Tucson Police Department to arrive. He was initially arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, which was later upgraded to manslaughter after Vega's death.
Despite the initial charges, the Pima County Attorney's Office ultimately declined to prosecute David Rivera, who was 31 or 32 at the time. The decision was based on Rivera's claim of self-defense. According to reports, Rivera called 911 during the incident and stated that he was being fired upon before he returned fire. Although investigators did not find a firearm in the vehicle Vega was in, the burden of proof was on the prosecutors to disprove the self-defense claim under Arizona law. After a thorough review, the prosecutor's office concluded that they could not meet this burden and all charges against Rivera were dropped, leaving Vega's family distraught by the outcome.
