In the early hours of a Tuesday morning in Omaha, Nebraska, the life of 39-year-old Hispanic male Aristeo Pena-Robles was tragically cut short. On July 25, 2017, at approximately 3:15 a.m., police responded to a report of a shooting and discovered Pena-Robles on a sidewalk in the eastern part of the city, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led to a suspect.
Police arrested 34-year-old Shawn Stewart in connection with the death of Pena-Robles. Stewart was initially charged with second-degree murder, among other counts. The motive for the shooting appears to have stemmed from a dispute between the two men. Reports indicate that both Stewart and Pena-Robles had been using meth when an argument erupted over damage Stewart had allegedly caused to Pena-Robles' car the previous night.
The altercation escalated into a physical fight, during which Stewart claimed that Pena-Robles and another individual were attacking him with a metal drapery rod. It was at this point that Stewart brandished a gun and fired, fatally wounding Pena-Robles. Stewart later pleaded no contest to charges of manslaughter and a weapons count. In September 2018, he was sentenced to 20 to 24 years in prison for his role in the death of Aristeo Pena-Robles.
