In the spring of 2018, the life of 18-year-old Colten J. Jensen, a White male from rural Hoskins, Nebraska, was tragically cut short. On May 23, 2018, Jensen passed away at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney from a gunshot wound sustained in an incident near Burwell. The young man, who had recently graduated from Winside High School as a member of the National Honor Society, was working as a ranch hand in the Burwell area at the time of his death.
An avid outdoorsman, Colten was
passionate about hunting, fishing, and bull riding. He was an active participant in high school sports, playing both football and basketball. His love for rodeo was set to continue, as he was registered to attend Chadron State College in the fall and had plans to join the university's rodeo team. He was remembered for his deep love for his family and the time he cherished spending with his parents, siblings, and friends.
The Loup County Attorney officially declared the shooting to be accidental. It was reported that three individuals witnessed the incident, and there have been no arrests or suspects named in connection with his death, as it was not deemed a criminal event.
In the wake of this tragedy, a testament to Colten's character emerged. Unbeknownst to his parents until they arrived at the hospital, he was a registered organ and tissue donor. His selfless decision ultimately saved and healed the lives of many others. His family later had the opportunity to meet the recipients of his heart and a kidney, finding a measure of solace in the profound impact of his final gift.
