In the early morning hours of October 27, 2018, a confrontation at a home in Hebron, Nebraska, resulted in the shooting death of 28-year-old Remington Elting, a White male from the nearby community of Davenport. The incident stemmed from an altercation that had occurred the previous night at a party in Davenport.
On the night of October 26, Michael Lewis was involved in a dispute at a party where a firearm was reportedly brandished.
Following this tense event, in the pre-dawn hours of October 27, Remington Elting, his brother Reuben Elting, and another man named Chance Gerdes went to Lewis's residence in Hebron. Lewis reported to the sheriff's office at approximately 3:24 a.m. that there was a break-in at his home and a shooting had occurred.
According to Lewis's account to investigators, he was awakened by Gerdes banging on his front door. He then heard banging at a side door and was confronted by Remington Elting, who grabbed him by his shirt. Lewis stated that he was able to push Elting away, but an altercation ensued, during which Lewis shot Remington Elting. As Reuben Elting then approached from the front of the house, Lewis said he pointed his gun at him and, when Reuben continued to advance, Lewis shot him as well.
Remington Elting died from his injuries. His brother, Reuben, was taken to a Lincoln hospital in critical condition. The Nebraska Attorney General's Office investigated the shooting and ultimately ruled that Michael Lewis had acted in self-defense. Consequently, no charges were filed against him for the death of Remington Elting.
While Lewis was not prosecuted for the shooting, he did face legal consequences for the events of the preceding night. He was sentenced to 24 months of probation for attempted use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony and another 24 months for terroristic threats stemming from the incident at the party in Davenport.
