In the quiet, rural landscape of Long Pine, Nebraska, the life of 18-year-old Logan Maring, a White male, was tragically cut short on the afternoon of May 22, 2019. Emergency services were dispatched to a residence on U.S. Highway 183 at 4:56 p.m. following a report of a gunshot wound. Upon arrival, law enforcement and the Brown County Ambulance Association discovered Logan Maring had sustained a fatal gunshot wound and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
He had just graduated from Anselmo-Merna High School earlier that month.
At the scene of the incident, authorities arrested 27-year-old Nathan Yankowski of rural Long Pine. An investigation into the shooting revealed that Yankowski and Maring had been playing with a gun when it discharged. Yankowski was subsequently charged with involuntary manslaughter and second-degree assault in connection with Logan's death. The Nebraska State Patrol assisted the Brown County Sheriff's Department in the investigation into the young man's untimely passing.
In December 2020, Nathan Yankowski entered into a plea deal, pleading no contest to manslaughter. In February 2021, he was sentenced for his role in Logan Maring's death. A Brown County District Court judge sentenced him to 15 to 20 years in prison for manslaughter and a consecutive sentence of 18 to 30 years for a related weapons charge. Those who knew Logan remember him as a young man who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and working on hot rods with his father. He was known for his constant smile and his love of making people laugh.
