In the small town of Imperial, Nebraska, the Thanksgiving holiday of 2022 took a tragic turn for a group of young friends. Jesse Krausnick, a 19-year-old White male, was home from his freshman year at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to celebrate with his family. On the night of November 24th, he was at a gathering at the home of his friend, 19-year-old Tristan Ferguson.
An evening that began with friends drinking and socializing descended into a nightmare when Ferguson picked up a shotgun.
Believing the firearm to be unloaded, Ferguson pointed it at Krausnick and pulled the trigger. The blast that followed struck Krausnick, inflicting a fatal wound. Emergency services were called to the residence on West 12th Street, and Krausnick was rushed to Chase County Community Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. The night of Thanksgiving joy ended in a devastating loss that would deeply affect the tight-knit community.
In the immediate aftermath, the Imperial Police Department and the Chase County Sheriff's Office responded to the shooting. Tristan Ferguson was taken into custody at the scene. The Nebraska State Patrol was called in to lead the homicide investigation. Ferguson was initially charged with manslaughter, use of a weapon to commit a felony, and other offenses related to providing alcohol to minors. He was booked into the Chase County Jail and later released on bond.
The legal process that followed saw Ferguson facing serious felony charges. In February 2024, a plea agreement was reached, and Ferguson pleaded no contest to charges of manslaughter and attempted possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony. During the sentencing, it was revealed that this was not the first time Ferguson had handled a firearm in a reckless manner around his friends. Ultimately, Tristan Ferguson was sentenced to eight to fourteen years in the Nebraska Department of Corrections for his role in the shooting death of his friend, Jesse Krausnick.
