On March 23, 1910, Guard Thomas C. McCullough, aged 40, was on duty at the New Castle County Workhouse in Prices Corner, Delaware. During the morning routine, as inmates were being escorted to breakfast, one prisoner seized a guard's service revolver and shot him twice. Responding to the commotion, Guard McCullough arrived at the scene, where the assailant shot him at close range, inflicting a severe stomach wound.
Both injured guards were transported to Delaware Hospital in Wilmington
