In the winter of 2003, the community of Sanford, Maine, was struck by the tragic death of 18-year-old Scott Vermette. On January 15th, the young man was found deceased inside his apartment, having been fatally shot with a shotgun. His life, full of potential and marked by a love for the outdoors and sports, was abruptly cut short.
Born in Sanford on December 24, 1984, Scott was a familiar face in the local youth sports scene, participating in football, baseball, and hockey through the
Sanford-Springvale Youth Athletic Association. He also explored interests in karate and pee-wee wrestling. He cherished outdoor activities with his family, including water skiing, tubing, camping, and fishing. Those who knew him remember a young man with a passion for life and a close bond with his family.
The investigation into the death of the male teenager swiftly led to a suspect. Authorities identified his friend, 20-year-old Dallas Sizemore, as the individual responsible for the shooting. In a turn of events that pointed to a tragedy among friends rather than a random act of violence, Sizemore was taken into custody and faced legal consequences for his actions.
In January of 2004, roughly a year after Scott's death, Dallas Sizemore pleaded guilty to a charge of manslaughter. He was subsequently sentenced to a 10-year prison term for his role in the fatal shooting. The resolution of the case brought a close to the legal proceedings, but the loss of a young life continues to be remembered by his family and the Sanford community.
