On Easter Sunday, April 16, 2006, William Robert Elliott, a 24-year-old Caucasian male, was tragically killed at his residence in Corinth, Maine. His life was cut short when he answered a knock at his door, only to be met by a gunman who opened fire. The assailant continued to shoot even after Elliott had fallen to the floor.
The investigation into the shooting quickly identified a person of interest: Stephen A.
Marshall, a 20-year-old from Nova Scotia, Canada, who had been visiting his father in Maine. The connection between Marshall and Elliott was not personal; rather, Marshall had targeted him after finding his name and address on Maine's publicly accessible sex offender registry. Earlier that same morning, Marshall had shot and killed another man, 57-year-old Joseph Gray of Milo, who was also on the registry. Investigators discovered that Marshall had used his laptop to research registered sex offenders in the state.
The manhunt for Marshall ended later that day. After abandoning his father's pickup truck in Bangor, he boarded a bus to Boston. As police intercepted the bus just as it was arriving at the station, Stephen Marshall took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, leaving behind many unanswered questions about what ultimately drove him to commit the two murders. Because the sole suspect in the killings was deceased, no arrests were made in connection with William Elliott's murder.
