On July 8, 2007, 27-year-old Tad Douglas Howard was found shot to death in a remote area of Amherst, Maine. The Maine State Police reported that in August 2007, John Turner, a 34-year-old resident of Bangor, was indicted for Howard's murder. The incident was classified as drug-related.
