On January 1, 2019, Dana Earl Hill, 31, was found fatally shot in his South Paris, Maine, apartment alongside his girlfriend, 31-year-old Heather Bickford. The couple's deaths were among 22 homicides in Maine that year.

Investigations revealed that Bickford had recently ended an 11-year relationship with Mark Penley, 51, of Peru, Maine, and had begun dating Hill. Penley had expressed violent intentions toward the couple, stating, "If I can't have her, no one can."
