In the summer of 2019, a simmering dispute in the parking lot of an Auburn, Maine Walmart escalated into a fatal encounter for Jean Fournier, a 41-year-old White male from Turner. The evening of July 27th ended in tragedy when Fournier was shot and killed. The incident, which police later stated was not a random act of violence, led to an investigation that quickly centered on a single suspect.
Witnesses at the scene described a heated argument between two men that devolved into a
physical fight. The conflict reportedly began after comments were exchanged between the shooter and the woman Fournier was with. According to some accounts, after the initial fistfight, Fournier was walking away when he was shot twice in the back. Emergency responders, including Good Samaritans, attempted to save him, but he succumbed to his injuries at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. An autopsy later confirmed that the cause of death was gunshot wounds and it was ruled a homicide.
In the days following the shooting, authorities identified the suspect as 21-year-old Gage Dalphonse of Auburn. Dalphonse remained at the scene after the shooting and claimed self-defense. He was taken into custody by the Auburn Police and later arrested and charged with murder. The case proceeded to trial, where the events of that night were scrutinized. Dalphonse's defense maintained that he acted in self-defense after Fournier struck him. Ultimately, a jury acquitted Gage Dalphonse of both murder and manslaughter charges in the death of Jean Fournier.
