In the summer of 2015, on a July evening in Ballantine, Montana, the life of 35-year-old Wesley "Wes" Sindelar, a Caucasian male, was tragically cut short. On July 20th, a heated confrontation with his father, James Douglas Sindelar, ended in a fatal gunshot wound. The incident occurred at Wesley's home on Thunderstick Road, where his father had been living in a tent on the property.
The catalyst for the deadly encounter was reportedly Wesley's drinking and the noise that accompanied it. James Sindelar, then 73, confronted his son, urging him to stop drinking. The argument escalated, and James produced a handgun. According to the elder Sindelar's account to law enforcement, the gun discharged during a struggle as Wesley tried to grab it, the bullet striking him in the head. Wesley's wife, however, told a different story to detectives, stating she witnessed James point the gun just inches from her husband's face before the struggle and the fatal shot.
After the shooting, it was James Sindelar who called 911 to report that he had shot his son. Emergency crews arrived to find Wesley Sindelar deceased at the scene.
James Douglas Sindelar was subsequently arrested and charged with negligent homicide. In March of the following year, he was convicted of the charge. The legal proceedings revealed the troubled dynamics within the family, with testimony from another of Sindelar's sons who expressed disbelief that his father would shoot his brother. During the trial, a forensic pathologist testified that the fatal shot was fired from a very close range, likely between one to several inches away.
In June 2016, James Sindelar was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the death of his son. The aftermath of the tragedy was further compounded by a disturbing incident in which Wesley's widow received a letter from the jail containing graphic photos of her deceased husband's body at the crime scene and from his autopsy. A note accompanying the photos read, "For your family album." This act led to a separate investigation into James Sindelar for sending the distressing materials. The death of Wesley Sindelar left behind his wife and two young children, and a community to grapple with the shocking act of patricide.
