In early February 1896, John Wilson, a 34-year-old sheepherder, and his companion, Daniel Cummings, were tending their flock near Deep Creek in what was then Cassia County, Idaho. This area, now part of Twin Falls County, was a hotspot for tensions between cattlemen and sheepherders, known as the Sheep Wars. On or about February 4, 1896, both men were found dead from gunshot wounds at their campsite.
