In the quiet town of Ammon, Idaho, the life of a young, white female named Michelle Shell Kern, aged 22, was tragically cut short on May 13, 2011. The horrific events of that day unfolded in a home on Amber Lane, leaving a community in shock and a family shattered by an act of devastating violence. Michelle, a recent graduate from Eastern Idaho Technical College with a degree in Business Management and Marketing, was a loving mother to her two young sons.
The nightmare began in the early
morning hours when a neighbor reported a fire at the residence. Emergency crews arrived to find a scene far more sinister than a simple house fire. Inside, they discovered the bodies of Michelle, her sister Melinda Kern, who was 19, and Michelle's two sons, ages three and nine months. All four had suffered gunshot wounds. The perpetrator of this horrific act was identified as 26-year-old Gaylin Leirmoe, Michelle's ex-boyfriend and the father of the two boys.
Investigators determined that Leirmoe, who resided in Iowa, had shown up at the home where Michelle and her children were living with her parents. Her parents were out of town at the time. After shooting Michelle, her sister, and his own two children, Leirmoe set a fire in the basement of the home. He then turned the gun on himself, inflicting a fatal wound. He was found unconscious but still breathing by deputies and was transported to a local hospital where he later died.
The investigation revealed a troubled history between Leirmoe and Michelle, who had separated several months prior to the incident. There was a record of domestic battery charges against Leirmoe in Idaho that were later dropped, and he also had a violent past in his home state of Iowa. The tragic event was ultimately ruled a murder-suicide, with Leirmoe as the sole suspect in the deaths of Michelle, her sister, and their two young children. No other arrests were made as the perpetrator had taken his own life.
