On the evening of Sunday, June 12, 2005, at approximately 8:00 PM, Shapar discovered three males breaking into his vehicle in the 4300
block of Martin Luther King Avenue, SW. A confrontation ensued, during which Shapar was stabbed. The assailants, described as three Black males, fled the scene following the attack. Shapar was grievously wounded and transported to the Washington Hospital Center's MEDSTAR unit, where he remained in critical condition for over a month.
Despite medical efforts, his injuries proved to be insurmountable. The Metropolitan Police Department launched a homicide investigation into Shapar's death. In the year following the incident, authorities indicated that they were actively pursuing leads in the case, which remained a difficult and open investigation.
