On September 8, 2011, Labbe was found deceased by a friend in a shed on his property located at 761 Texas Hill Road. An autopsy later confirmed that the cause of his death was gunshot wounds, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.
In the years following the discovery of his body, the investigation into John Labbe's murder has remained active, eventually being taken on by the New Hampshire
Cold Case Unit. Despite numerous leads and tips from the public, no arrests have been made in connection with his killing, and there are no publicly named suspects. The case continues to be an open and ongoing investigation.
Authorities have urged anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to come forward to help bring closure to Labbe's family. In 2013, his family offered a $10,000 reward for information that would lead to the arrest and prosecution of the person or persons responsible for his death. Investigators have asked for information regarding Labbe's activities between September 6 and September 8, 2011.
