On November 7, 2024, 18-year-old Gage Zachary Cassen of Derry, New Hampshire, was found deceased behind the Dollar General store on Wilton Road in Milford. An autopsy conducted by Deputy Chief Medical Examiner Mitchell Weinberg determined that Cassen died from a single gunshot wound to the chest, and his death was ruled a homicide.
Cassen was a former student at Pinkerton Academy in Derry and had been working for Trash King, a junk removal company, for the past two years.
His employer and childhood friend, Tyler Farmer, described him as 'an amazing employee and great little brother,' noting that Cassen had been focused on working hard and had become more serious about his Christian faith.
At the time of his death, Cassen was facing criminal charges, including two felony counts of theft by unauthorized taking in Salem and contempt of court for allegedly ignoring a subpoena to testify before a Hillsborough County Grand Jury. Despite these legal issues, those close to him believed he was turning his life around.
The New Hampshire State Police Major Crime Unit is actively investigating Cassen's death and has urged anyone with information to come forward. As of now, no arrests have been made, and authorities have not identified any suspects or determined whether the shooting was targeted or random.
Cassen's family and friends remember him for his big heart, loyalty, and contagious smile. Calling hours were held on November 14, 2024, at Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium in Derry, followed by funeral services on November 15 at Calvary Bible Church.
