On October 27, 2023, hunters discovered the body of 42-year-old Jeffrey Caron of Barre, Vermont, in the woods along Gore Road in Plainfield. An autopsy determined that Caron died from a gunshot wound, and his death was ruled a homicide.

Investigations revealed that Caron had been involved in drug-related activities. On October 13, 2023, he was arrested for fentanyl trafficking.
