On January 13, 1901, Deputy Sheriff James Vernon Fish, aged 42, was fatally shot in West Greenwich, Rhode Island, while attempting to arrest three men suspected of attending a cockfight. After sustaining a gunshot wound to the abdomen, Deputy Fish was transported to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, where he succumbed to his injuries three days later, on January 16, 1901.
