On the evening of January 22, 2018, the sound of gunshots broke the quiet on Dexter Street in Providence, Rhode Island. When police arrived, they found 22-year-old Jamal Contreras, a Black/African American male, inside a vehicle, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries the following day, January 23, 2018.
His death was quickly ruled a homicide, sparking an intense investigation by the Providence Police Department.
In the days and weeks that followed, the investigation into Jamal's death continued, with detectives working to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting. The police department made public appeals for information, hoping that someone from the community would come forward with details that could lead to an arrest. A reward was offered, yet for a period, the case remained unsolved, leaving a void for his grieving family and friends who remembered him as a young man with a promising future. The incident was one of several acts of gun violence in the city at the time, raising concerns among residents.
Years later, a breakthrough in the case emerged through legal proceedings in a separate murder case. During the 2025 trial of Jaythan Hang for the June 2018 murder of David Page, a cooperating witness provided testimony that implicated both Hang and another individual, Chandanoeuth Hay, in the murder of Jamal Contreras. This testimony, given by Kennedy Terrero under a cooperation agreement, finally brought suspects' names to light in connection with the once-unsolved homicide, offering a potential path toward justice for Jamal and his family.
