On May 13, 1927, Federal Prohibition Agent Charles Bintliff and Deputy State Sheriff Charles Halpin were fatally shot near Redfield, South Dakota, while attempting to apprehend Walter Chrisman, a suspect wanted for wounding another federal agent a week earlier.
