In the small community of Adams, North Dakota, a domestic dispute on May 1, 2019, ended in the tragic death of 36-year-old Stephanie Aune, a White female. The incident occurred at a shelter where she was living with her father, Steven Aune, and another family member.
On that Wednesday morning, an argument arose when 65-year-old Steven Aune expressed that he wanted his daughter and the other relative to move out of the house.
During the course of the dispute, Steven Aune shot his daughter. A family member who was present at the scene immediately drove Stephanie to a hospital in the nearby town of Park River. Despite the medical attention she received, Stephanie succumbed to her injuries about an hour and a half after the shooting.
Law enforcement officials, including a Walsh County deputy and a state crime bureau agent, responded to the incident. Steven Aune was taken into custody and subsequently charged with murder in connection with his daughter's death. In his statement to the authorities, he admitted to the shooting but claimed that it was an accident and that he did not recall pulling the trigger.
Stephanie, who was born on April 24, 1983, in Grand Forks, North Dakota, had grown up and attended school in the Park River area. Described as a talented artist who loved her children and animals, she enjoyed activities such as fishing, hiking, reading, and knitting. She had worked various jobs in the Park River region before relocating to Grand Forks in 2018. Her life was remembered at a funeral service on May 9, 2019, at the Victory Free Lutheran Church in Park River, followed by her interment at the Memorial Park Cemetery.
