On January 3, 1980, in the Mars Hill community of Cleburne County, Alabama, a tragic event unfolded at the Roberts family farmhouse. Eula Verlin Roberts returned home around 2:00 p.m. from a trip to Cedartown, Georgia, and noticed the screen door ajar with a bunched-up rug propping it open. Inside, she found the kitchen drawers pulled out and items scattered on the floor. Despite her apprehension, Verlin proceeded to check on her family members.
