In the early morning hours of Thursday, May 3, 2007, a burst of gunfire shattered the predawn quiet at the intersection of Jefferson Street and Illinois Avenue, NW in Washington, D.C. Inside a vehicle passing through the intersection, 24-year-old Kevin Darnell Caldwell, a Black male, was struck by the bullets. The shooting, which occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m., would prove to be fatal for the young man.
Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to the scene of the shooting, launching a homicide investigation into Caldwell's death. Despite their efforts and the passage of time, the case has grown cold. No suspects have been publicly identified in the killing of Kevin Caldwell, and the motive behind the shooting remains unclear.
His death left behind a grieving family, including a young son, who continue to seek answers and justice.
The investigation into Kevin Caldwell's murder is still open and is being handled by the department's Violent Crimes Branch. In an effort to generate new leads, the Metropolitan Police Department is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for his death. Detectives are urging anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to come forward and assist in bringing a resolution to this long-unsolved case.
