Steven Eugene Beynum Jr., a 31-year-old Black man, was killed on a late-summer Sunday afternoon in Southeast Washington, DC, his life ending in the same instant that an ordinary day turned irrevocably violent. On Sunday, August 26, 2007, at approximately 4:08 p.m., he was shot in the 2500 block of Savannah Street SE, a residential stretch of road in the city’s Ward 8.
