In the quiet community of Greenhill, Alabama, the life of 16-year-old Chelsie Sierra Garner was tragically cut short on April 7, 2009. A student at Rogers High School, Chelsie was known for her love of sports, particularly softball and volleyball, and was described as a happy and cheerful young woman who was cherished by those who knew her. Her plans for the upcoming high school prom were shattered when she was found deceased in her home.
On that Tuesday morning, Chelsie's boyfriend
became concerned when she did not answer her phone and discovered the devastating scene at her residence. Inside, law enforcement would find Chelsie, her 40-year-old mother, Tammy Morgan Garner, her 48-year-old aunt, Karen Beaty, and her 11-year-old cousin, Bobby Beaty, all victims of a fatal shooting. The family members from Illinois were visiting to support Tammy through a contentious divorce.
The investigation quickly identified Chelsie's father, 45-year-old Kevin Lee Garner, as the suspect. Authorities believe that in the midst of the divorce proceedings, he went to his estranged wife's home around midnight and committed the murders. In the divorce filings, Tammy Garner had made allegations of physical and emotional abuse against her husband.
After the killings, Kevin Garner fled the scene. He then drove to his own home in Priceville, which he set on fire. His body was later found near the burned residence, having died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The case concluded as a murder-suicide, with no arrests to be made as the sole suspect had taken his own life.
