On September 5, 2017, 35-year-old Howard Dewayne Bruce was fatally shot in Birmingham's West End community. The incident occurred around 3:00 AM as Bruce was driving his truck near the intersection of 15th Way and Pearson Avenue. After being struck by multiple gunshots, his vehicle continued moving and was subsequently hit by a Norfolk Southern train. Bruce was transported to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
