Dortez Travon Jamal Major, a 21-year-old Black male, was fatally shot on November 26, 2017, in Prichard, Alabama. Known as 'T-Juvie,' Major was driving a vehicle near the intersection of Thomas and Magee Streets with his family when the incident occurred. In the car with him were his four-year-old son, Dortez Major Jr., his pregnant girlfriend, Breantay Coleman, and her infant child.
An assailant opened fire on the vehicle, resulting in Major's death.
The gunfire that erupted that day did not spare the other occupants of the vehicle. Both Major's young son and his girlfriend sustained injuries in the attack. Miraculously, the infant in the car was unharmed. The shooting was reportedly connected to an altercation that had taken place at a Mobile nightclub earlier in the same week. The tragic event prompted an outpouring of grief from the community, with funeral services for Major being held at the New Shiloh Baptist Church in Mobile.
In the wake of the shooting, law enforcement officials identified 20-year-old Christopher Johnson as a person of interest in the case. Following an investigation, Johnson was arrested and faced serious charges for his alleged involvement in the incident. He was charged with one count of murder for the death of Dortez Major and four counts of attempted murder, reflecting the number of individuals who were in the vehicle at the time of the shooting.
