In the early morning hours of July 16, 2019, a burst of violence shattered the quiet of an Ardmore, Alabama home, leaving a beloved grandmother dead. Janice Diane Ferguson Ballard, a 72-year-old White female, was fatally shot when three men broke into her residence on Elkwood Section Road. The incident, which unfolded around 2 a.m., was not a random act of violence but a home invasion with a specific, illicit purpose.
The intruders, later identified as Khalib Holden, Adrian Miguel Lopez, and Quintin Sincere Courtney, had reportedly come to the house with the intention of purchasing drugs. An altercation erupted between the three men and another person present inside the home. In the ensuing chaos, gunfire rang out, and a bullet struck and killed Janice Ballard. Her family would later remember her as a devoted grandmother who died defending her home.
The investigation into the death of Janice Ballard moved swiftly. Law enforcement officials, including the Madison County Sheriff's Office narcotics team, tracked two of the suspects to a gas station in Huntsville, where they were apprehended. The third suspect, Quintin Sincere Courtney, surrendered to authorities later the same day. All three men were charged with capital murder and first-degree robbery, facing the gravest of consequences for their alleged roles in the deadly home invasion.
In June of 2023, there was a significant development in the legal proceedings. Adrian Miguel Lopez, one of the three men charged, entered into a plea agreement. He pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of murder and received a sentence of 40 years in prison, with credit for time already served. As part of the agreement, the first-degree robbery charge against him was dismissed. The cases against the other two suspects, Khalib Holden and Quintin Sincere Courtney, were still pending at that time, with no trial dates having been set.
