In the early morning hours of June 11, 2022, a party on Twin Beech Road in Fairhope, Alabama, turned tragic, ending the life of 22-year-old Cory Terrell 'CJ' Edwards Jr., a Black male. Gunfire erupted at the gathering at approximately 1:00 a.m., and Edwards was struck. He was privately transported to Thomas Hospital before being transferred to USA Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Edwards, a 2018 graduate of Fairhope High School, was a beloved figure in his
community. He was remembered as a talented athlete who played on both the varsity football and basketball teams. Friends and family described him as having a bright smile and a kind demeanor, with one cousin likening his loss to 'taking the life of an infant' due to his gentle nature. His home on Twin Beech Road became a memorial in the days following his death, adorned with tributes to the young man whose life was cut short.
The investigation into the shooting led by the Fairhope Police Department involved numerous witness interviews and the recovery of three firearms from the scene. In November 2022, a Baldwin County Grand Jury indicted 20-year-old Aiden Thompson of Fairhope on a charge of manslaughter in connection with Edwards' death. Thompson was subsequently arrested at his home.
The case proceeded to trial, and in September 2023, Aiden Thompson was found guilty of manslaughter. He faced a potential prison sentence of two to twenty years and was scheduled for sentencing on December 5, 2023. Investigators indicated that the shooting did not appear to be intentional. Two of the three guns recovered from the party had been previously reported stolen from unlocked vehicles in the area, including the one Thompson had in his possession.
