In the summer of 2022, the life of 25-year-old Keydrick Davies Evans, an African American male, was tragically cut short in Huntsville, Alabama. His story came to a grim conclusion on July 22, when investigators, acting on a tip, unearthed his body from a shallow grave at an abandoned home on Blue Spring Road. An autopsy would later reveal that Evans had died from a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
The discovery launched a homicide investigation by the Huntsville Police Department, who quickly began to piece together the events that led to his death.
Investigators believe the motive behind the killing was drug-related. The investigation led to the identification of three individuals connected to the crime. Warrants were issued, and soon after, three suspects were taken into custody. Daniel Joe Smallwood, 34, and Samantha Bittlow Icy Parker, 28, were both arrested and charged with murder. The third suspect, 22-year-old Dominick 'Big Man' LaShawn McIver, initially sought by police, turned himself in and was also charged with murder.
The legal proceedings for those accused in Evans' death have seen significant developments. In October 2023, McIver was indicted for murder. However, in a turn of events, he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter in April 2024. His plea agreement resulted in a 20-year sentence, with three years to be served in prison followed by five years of probation. Court proceedings for the other two suspects were scheduled to take place in 2025, with Daniel Joe Smallwood's jury trial set for June 24 and Samantha Bittlow Icy Parker's for April 29.
