In the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington, D.C., on the evening of January 10, 2015, the sound of gunshots broke the winter quiet. At approximately 9:40 p.m., officers from the Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to the vicinity of 14th and Monroe Streets Northwest to investigate the reports of gunfire. Their search led them to the 3400 block of Holmead Place NW, where they discovered a young man suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
