In the early evening of October 28, 2015, tragedy struck in the 4200 block of Edson Place in Northeast Washington, D.C. Twenty-five-year-old Marcquetta Cunningham, a female, was shot in a violent encounter that would ultimately claim her life. Alongside her, a man was also struck by gunfire, though his injuries were not fatal. First responders rushed to the scene at approximately 6:16 p.m., finding Cunningham unconscious and not breathing.
She was quickly transported to a local hospital, but her wounds proved too severe, and she was pronounced dead.
The investigation into Cunningham's death began immediately, with the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch taking the lead. In the days that followed, authorities released a video to the public, hoping to identify a person of interest and a four-door car seen in the vicinity of the shooting. Despite this effort and a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction, the case has remained unsolved.
The community was left to grapple with the senseless violence that took a young woman's life. While the male victim was expected to recover, the loss of Marcquetta Cunningham left a lasting scar. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with her murder, and the search for those responsible continues.
