Patrolman Ignatius John Charlie, born on May 29, 1964, in San Francisco, California, joined the Alakanuk Police Department in June 1984. At 20 years old, he was the youngest police officer in Alaska to be killed in the line of duty. On May 10, 1985, around 2:00 AM, while on routine patrol, Officer Charlie encountered a suspicious snow machine on a road in Alakanuk. During his investigation, he interrupted a burglary in progress and was fatally shot.
