On October 26, 1996, Anchorage Police Officer Dan Richard Seely, aged 40, responded to a domestic violence call in Chugiak, a suburb of Anchorage, Alaska. The call involved serving a warrant to Paul Ely Jr., who had violated a protective order by appearing at his estranged wife's residence. Upon arrival, Officer Seely learned that Ely had fled the scene. As Seely pursued Ely inside the home, Ely ambushed him, shooting Seely in the face at close range.
