On the morning of January 28, 2016, a 19-year-old Hispanic female, Selena Annette Mullenax, was found dead on the beach below the Point Woronzof parking lot in Anchorage, Alaska, after a dog walker called police around 8:37 a.m. Roughly an hour later, officers discovered a second victim, 20-year-old Foriegnne “Onie” Aubert-Morissette, gravely wounded farther down the shoreline; he was rushed to a hospital and died shortly thereafter.
Detectives treated the scene as a double homicide while they worked to piece together the victims' final hours and determine whether the two knew each other.
In the days that followed, investigators asked the public for help, releasing the victims' names and appealing for any information about their activities before the killings. Early reports withheld the exact cause of death pending autopsy, but the discovery timeline and location galvanized a city already on edge over winter violence along the coastal greenbelt between Earthquake Park and Point Woronzof.
Months later, the case broke open. On December 12, 2016, a grand jury indicted 21-year-old Jamal Hall on four counts—two of first-degree murder and two of second-degree murder—in the deaths of the 19-year-old female, Selena Annette Mullenax, and Aubert-Morissette. Authorities also said Hall was wanted in a separate Walgreens robbery investigation.
Before the week was out, Anchorage police found him. In the early hours of December 17, 2016, officers arrested Hall at an Anchorage residence. Two people with him—23-year-old Devonte Wyche and 18-year-old Katelyn Moon—were arrested on charges of hindering prosecution for allegedly helping him evade capture. News accounts that weekend reported Hall was taken into custody without incident, closing the year-long manhunt that began the day the 19-year-old female, Selena Annette Mullenax, was found at Point Woronzof.
Years later, the courtroom chapter arrived. In September 2022, Hall pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder tied to the slayings of the 19-year-old female, Selena Annette Mullenax, and Aubert-Morissette, with sentencing set for January 2023 after completion of a presentence report. The plea acknowledged responsibility for the shootings that began with that winter morning discovery along the inlet and ended with a long-awaited admission in court.
