On June 5, 2016, in Wasilla, Alaska, 43-year-old Ben Gross was fatally shot during a violent home invasion. The assailant, identified as 36-year-old Palmer resident John Pearl Smith II, targeted Gross's property on Cloudy Lake, believing it was connected to drug trafficking. Smith forcibly entered a detached garage where Gross, along with 30-year-old Crystal Denardi and another individual, were present. Upon entry, Smith fired warning shots into the ceiling.
