Twenty-six-year-old Sean Shuler, a male resident of Capitol Heights, Maryland, was found lying in the street, having been shot multiple times.
Nearby, inside a parked car, were two other men, also suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. The other victims were identified as 26-year-old Javon Abney and 24-year-old Tyrik Hagood. All three men were pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the triple homicide revealed a complex story. Shuler and the other two victims had all grown up together in the same Southwest D.C. neighborhood. The motive for the killings was not immediately clear, though police explored several possibilities. One angle investigators looked into was that Shuler was scheduled to testify as a prosecution witness in a murder trial. Another theory came from a confidential source who told police the victims were attempting to purchase firearms but did not have enough money. Inside the vehicle with Abney and Hagood, police found a handgun, ammunition, and drugs.
The investigation led to the identification of multiple suspects. In June 2019, authorities arrested 28-year-old Rakeem Willis of Northeast D.C. and charged him with three counts of first-degree murder. A second suspect, 30-year-old Jonathan Winston, was arrested in November of the same year and also charged with first-degree murder while armed. A third individual, Jeffrey Felder, was later charged as an accessory after the fact. Prosecutors argued that Willis had lured the three victims to the quiet, dead-end street where they were ambushed by gunmen. A stolen Lexus sedan used in the commission of the murders was later discovered burned across the Maryland state line.
In November 2022, a jury found Rakeem Willis guilty of three counts of first-degree murder while armed and fleeing law enforcement. In February 2023, he was sentenced to 120 years in prison for his role in the killings. The case against Jonathan Winston also moved through the court system, with both men initially being charged with conspiracy in addition to the murder charges.
