In the spring of 2023, a life was tragically cut short in a Birmingham apartment complex, leaving a community in mourning and a family seeking justice. Kaziya Nykysha Page, a 25-year-old woman, died on Saturday, April 8, 2023, from injuries sustained in a violent encounter.
The tragic events unfolded that morning when an argument erupted between Page and her on-again, off-again girlfriend, Tayla Roxann Roland. The dispute escalated, and Roland shot Page twice in the stomach. In a desperate attempt to escape, the wounded Page fled from the apartment, even leaping over a second-story railing, an act captured on a neighbor's doorbell camera. Despite her efforts to get away and a 911 call for help, Page succumbed to her injuries less than three hours later at a local hospital.
Law enforcement quickly identified Roland as the suspect, and she was taken into custody later that same day at a residence in Birmingham. During the investigation, Roland asserted that she had acted in self-defense, claiming that Page had threatened her with a sharp object. However, investigators never found any such object at the scene.
Tayla Roxann Roland, who was 25 at the time of the incident, was charged with the murder of Kaziya Page. Her claim of self-defense was ultimately rejected by a Jefferson County jury, and in June of that year, she was convicted of murder. Following her conviction, a judge sentenced Roland to 52 years in prison for her role in the death of Kaziya Nykysha Page.
