In the quiet of a late Thursday evening in Gardendale, Alabama, a domestic argument spiraled into a tragedy that would end the life of a respected police officer. Andrew Wade Kimbrel, a 42-year-old white male and a veteran of the Vestavia Hills Police Department, was fatally shot in his home at the Woodbrook Apartments on May 2, 2019. The events of that night would not only leave two children without a father but would also lead to the arrest and conviction of his wife.
The night began
with a heated argument between Kimbrel and his wife, Stephanie Nicole Keller. Their two teenage children were in their bedrooms as the dispute escalated. Kimbrel's daughter later recounted to investigators that the fighting between the couple was a regular occurrence, but this particular argument felt more severe. So much so that she locked her bedroom door and used Snapchat to contact her grandfather, asking him to come and get her. At some point during the confrontation, she overheard her father say something to the effect of, 'If you think I'm such a bad person, why don't you just shoot me?' to which Keller allegedly replied, 'Give me your gun.'
Shortly after 10:30 p.m., a gunshot rang out in the apartment. It was Keller who called 911 to report the shooting. When Gardendale police officers arrived, they found Kimbrel in the corner of the master bedroom closet with a critical gunshot wound to his head. He was rushed to UAB Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of May 3, 2019. An autopsy would later reveal that he was shot near the top of his head in a downward trajectory. The weapon used was his own service pistol.
The investigation into Kimbrel's death quickly focused on his wife. Initially, Keller claimed that her husband had pushed the gun into her hand and it accidentally discharged. However, her story reportedly changed multiple times during police interviews. The following day, Stephanie Nicole Keller, then 43, was arrested and charged with the murder of her husband. She was taken into custody by the Gardendale Police and later transferred to the Jefferson County Jail with a bond set at $100,000.
The legal proceedings that followed brought more details of the troubled marriage to light. During the trial in late October 2021, prosecutors argued that the shooting was intentional, a result of ongoing marital discord. The defense, however, maintained that the shooting was a tragic accident. Kimbrel's daughter provided key testimony, describing a history of conflict between her father and stepmother. After two days of deliberation, the jury convicted Stephanie Keller of the lesser charge of manslaughter. In January 2022, a judge sentenced her to 20 years in prison for the death of her husband, bringing a legal conclusion to a case that began with a domestic dispute and ended in the loss of a life dedicated to public service.
