Man found shot to death in his home
In the late summer of 1986, the community of Fort Lupton, Colorado, was shaken by the tragic death of Gerald J. Drieling, a 40-year-old local farmer. On August 27th, Drieling had been at a family gathering before leaving to tend to the irrigation water on his property. When he did not return after a reasonable amount of time, a concerned family member went to his house to check on him.
Upon entering the home, a grim discovery was made. Drieling was found lying face down on the floor of his hallway, the victim of a fatal gunshot wound. The scene suggested a violent struggle had not taken place, leading investigators to theorize about the circumstances of his death.
Authorities believe that Drieling may have returned home to unexpectedly interrupt a burglary in progress. Evidence at the scene suggested that he was forced to lie down in the hallway before he was shot. The perpetrator or perpetrators fled the scene, leaving behind a mystery that has haunted his family and the community for decades. Despite the passage of time, the case remains an active cold case with the Weld County Sheriff's Office, who continue to seek information from the public that might lead to an arrest and finally bring justice for Gerald Drieling. To this day, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with his murder.
